Important News: How to Drive Safely in the snow and Frost:
Snow: When driving in snow, the first thing to do is get your speed right - not too fast so that you could lose control, but not so slow that you could lose your momentum when you need it. You also need to accelerate, brake and steer as smoothly as possible. Start moving off very gently from a stationary position and avoid high revs on the engine. If you should get a skid as you are driving, take your foot off the accelerator and try to steer out of the skid, do not touch the brake. Keep your distance from the vehicle in front, allow up to ten seconds of a gap if possible. Warn other roads in plenty of time before you intend to turn, or change lanes, or stop. Allow plenty of time for your journey, and carry extra clothes in your vehicle in case you break down or get stuck.
Before you start your journey, check the weather forecast and ask yourself is it really necessary to travel. make sure you have plenty of fuel in case you get stuck.
Checklist before travelling:
- Check weather forecast
- Allow extra time for travelling
- Bring extra clothes, some food and water
- make sure your mobile is fully charged
- stay on major roads if possible
- increase your distance form other road users
- make sure your tyres are in good condition and are correctly inflated
- use your lights heads or dipped as necessary, and if you have to use fog lights switch off when not needed
- watch for shaded areas that are not thawing as quickly as other areas.
Rain: Would all drivers please use their dipped headlights during the day when weather conditions are poor. This helps other road users see you in time. Remember side lights are a waste of time in poor visibility. You need to see and be seen. Make sure all lenses and reflectors are clean and working correctly.
Fog: Use high intensity fog lights when visibility is less than 100 metres, and switch them off as soon visibility improves over 100 metres. Don't drive in dense fog if you can postpone your trip or journey, and avoid driving in dense fog at night if at all possible.
